Our History

Over 100 hundred years ago the community of Sudbury became the first community in Ontario to own and operate its own electricity generating facility. While the demand of electricity has increased from the original seventy-five thousand watts to two-hundred million watts, the driver to keep customers at the leading-edge of innovation has remained with Greater Sudbury Hydro Inc.

From the original steam-powered plant, we have moved to 30 modern substations controlled by the latest in computerized equipment. This system supplies reliable electricity to residential and commercial customers, insuring that the community has the electrical infrastructure to grow and prosper.

The words "Community-owned, community-operated and community-minded" are the guide of all our business decisions. This commitment to our heritage and future, combined with local control, will ensure the needs and concerns of our community.

Board of Directors

Originally Sudbury Hydro Electric Commission was governed by a board of Commissioners made up of the Mayor of the City of Sudbury and four Commissioners elected by the voters during municipal elections.

Our structure changed in January 2000. We were no longer a Commission.

Today we are a business corporation under the rules of the Ontario Business Corporations Act. We are governed by a Board of Directors, appointed by our Shareholder.

The Board of Directors is responsible for setting the direction for the future.
