Our History
Over 100 hundred years ago the community of Sudbury became the first community in Ontario to own and operate its own electricity generating facility. While the demand of electricity has increased from the original seventy-five thousand watts to two-hundred million watts, the driver to keep customers at the leading-edge of innovation has remained with Greater Sudbury Hydro Inc.
From the original steam-powered plant, we have moved to 30 modern substations controlled by the latest in computerized equipment. This system supplies reliable electricity to residential and commercial customers, insuring that the community has the electrical infrastructure to grow and prosper.
The words "Community-owned, community-operated and community-minded" are the guide of all our business decisions. This commitment to our heritage and future, combined with local control, will ensure the needs and concerns of our community.

Mayor Marianne Matichuk - Director - GSU & Greater Sudbury Hydro Inc.
Mayor Marianne Matichuk is a proud 4th generation Greater Sudburian and the city’s first-ever elected female Mayor. She grew up in the city’s Donovan and West End areas and learned her trademark work ethic and people skills working in her grandparents’ store “Macks Clothing”. She grew up learning that a strong community is one where people work hard and work together toward a common goal regardless of age, race, gender, language, politics, or social class.
Marianne carried that philosophy into the workforce. In 30-years of work experience, she’s collected a diverse range of experiences giving her insights into the city’s major sectors. She has worked in health care as a ward clerk with the Sudbury Memorial Hospital, has owned a restaurant, a successful catering business, and spent 17 years as a municipal employee. At the City, Marianne was the Food Services Manager at Pioneer Manor - and spent seven years as the City’s Health and Safety Officer. In that position, the future Mayor would work closely, on the front-lines with workers in all city departments - from road crews to Emergency Services, and Managers at all levels. In 2008, she was recruited by Vale-INCO to be their Safety Supervisor - a job where she learned a great deal about the operations of a major international mining company. She held that position until she was elected Mayor.
A team builder and solution driven individual, Marianne has steered many of her projects to success. She has several successes that were based on customer input and satisfaction as the driving force. Most notably the satisfaction surveys of the residents at Pioneer Manor and the lowered accident frequency rate during her employment at the City and at Vale.
Over the years, Marianne has been heavily involved in community service - including the United Way, Meals on Wheels, the Special Olympics, Workplace Safety North, Safe Communities, the Canadian Hospital Association, and Ministry of Education and Training. Her Provincial involvement includes advocating for money per diem for residents nutritional needs in Long Term Care Facilities as well as setting standards with the Ministry of Education and Training for the Chef Apprentice programs.
A life-long learner, Marianne is continually updating and upgrading her education. She is a graduate of Cambrian College’s Hotel and Restaurant Management Program, is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional, a certified Health and Safety Consultant, a certified Nutrition Manager and has professional certificates from Cambrian College and Carleton University.
Marianne is also a published author with two publications to date.
Marianne and her husband Jim have been together for fifteen years. They have two adult children, Julie and Christopher. They live with their beagle, Miss Money Penney (Penney)
