Peaksaver Program
Be a neighborhood power star with peaksaver®. Joining the peaksaver® program means you can help reduce the demand for electricity in your community. And you'll feel great knowing you're doing something good for our environment.
During hot summer weekdays, when air conditioners are running at their maximum, the demand for electricity is at its highest. These times are known as 'peak demand'. By enrolling in peaksaver® our air conditioners work together to reduce the strain on the electricity system and help prevent an energy supply shortage.
Enrolling is easy and FREE! Greater Sudbury Hydro will install either a thermostat or switch , your choice, at no cost to you.
The installed device has the ability to receive a signal that can cycle down your air conditioner which may increase your home's temperature by only 1°or 2° C for short periods of time. The adjustment will only occur during week days (never on weekends or holidays), most likely between 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. And you can always opt out. We assure you that this won't compromise your control or the comfort of your home. By participating in peaksaver® you are joining tens of thousands of Ontarians who are taking action to help lessen the strain on the electricity system and in turn, help our environment.
During a peaksaver event, when the province's electricity system is most strained, the set point of your new programmable thermostat will be raised by ½° C every hour for a maximum of 4 hours per event, that's a maximum total of only 2°C .
Alternatively, if you want to keep the thermostat you have, we will install a switch, outside, at your air conditioning unit. During a PeakSaver event, your air conditioner will be switched for only 9 minutes every ½ hour for the 4 hour event, and our contractor will not have to enter your home. You probably won't notice any difference in the comfort level or temperature of your home. In fact, customers who have devices say they don't notice when a peaksaver® event takes place.
To be eligible you must be the owner (or have the owner's permission) of a small business or a homeowner of a single-family home and you must have a Central Air Conditioning System.
We'll do all the work at no expense to you. The device is free, installation is free and you'll even receive a $25 credit on your electricity bill from Greater Sudbury Hydro just for signing up. You can also include an Electric Water Heater in the program along with your central Air conditioner.
